LISTEN TO AND DOWNLOAD THIS COMPILATION
Will Simmons “Beauty Rest By Simmons”
Released on his Bees Make Honey label in 1994 from Wilmington, NC. A really good songwriter ands home taper, Will has churned out lots of solid material in his home taping career. Hear the song Taking Me On
Dave Prescott “X-Factor”
another stewing brew of electronic mayhem and texture from this icon of the early days of home recorded electronic sound. On the Sound Of Pig label from approx 1987. Hear an excerpt
The Larry Mondello Band “Mondello Mantras”
a 1991 release from these insane home tapers from Connecticut, from nutso boogie to broken tape players Mondello was the epitome of the anything goes approach. Listen to Mantra 1
Dave Munkhoff “ In The Red”
I can’t remember exactly where Dave was from but he should could shred the lead guitar. This tape was from 1992. Hear the short multi layered guitar track, A Major Interlude
Illusion Of Safety “My Mind Is Killing Me”
One of the icon groups of the entire Cassette underground, Illusion Of Safety was Dan Burke ( sometimes aided and abetted by others). On this tape from 1986 ( I think) they get industrial by whipping out the drum machine and of course bring in all sorts of destructive and uncomfortable sounds. Hear an excerpt
Pussygroove Thang “ Press The Flesh”
Top of the class scum rock from Ginger Leigh, who also put out tapes under his own name. Scuzzy power chords and his confrontationally fun lyrics an d ripped apart voice make for a real treat. Hear Pop Tart Pussy From 1987.
PBK “Profusion”
This 1991 outing by Phillip B. Klingler on the Realizaton label veers into dramatically into noise territory and goes a long way in showing why PBK was one of the scene’s most important avant contributors. Hear Hanged Man
Various Artists “My Dream Date With Boyd Rice”
Compiled by Mike Tetrault on his Epitapes label in about 1989 or 90 I believe, this fine tape of dark ambient, loop madness and electronic tomfoolery fell right in with what Mike usually accomplished very well on his many compilations. Tetrault was also a fine poet who worked with collaborators such as Ken Clinger and others. Hear the jittery loops of Robert Turman on Four Cut Jump
This tape also featured Dave Prescott, Aversion Sonore, Le Syndicate, Illusion Of Safety, Don Campau ( listed as “Dan” Campau), Croiners, Cephalic Index, La Sonorite Jaune, Kapotte Muziek and others.
YU “I Hope I’m Dreaming (This World)”
This Texas trio put out high quality tape filled with social statement and sarcastic asides accompanied by hard hitting rhythm and synths. Real good stuff. Hear their track, Get A Gun from 1988.
Nicole Campau “The Old Guard”
My own daughter was about eleven when she did her first home taping. I helped her with some technical stuff and play a bit as well. Later, when she was 19 she made another, deeper and exotic tape “Akrisa” but this early tape is very special to me still with charm, intelligence and a verve that cannot be denied. Hear her classic song, New Fashion from 1988.
