February 2011
Slowed down by the flu during January I was still able to muster the energy to get some nice new content for this site. Plus, getting help from others like Jack Hertz was really helpful. Thanks Jack.
I am making past “News” pages available now ( on the main page or click “past news pages” above right.
Rocking out of South Dakota is this month’s Artist Spotlight , Russ Stedman. One of the funnest and most talented rockers ever in the underground Russ has been producing his home recorded work for more than two decades now, in fact, much more. Read his interview and learn more about this essential music maker. And, by the way, he makes ALL his music available for FREE online.
Our tape of the month comes from Japanese home taper, Masaki Eguti. I actually received this cassette in the mid 1980s from the Calypso Now label in Switzerland and am grateful to Rudi Tuscher for providing and hosting the files. I never knew what ever happened to this quirky home taper and the internet is of little help here. If you know any additional information let me know. A really fun tape.
In the Features section, Jack Hertz has authored a fine interview with San Francisco electronic musician, Thomas DiMuzio, a fixture on experimental music scenes for many, many years now.
The Perspectives page has a long essay by British musician, Andy Martin on the dubious delights of Cassette Culture.
On the No Pigeonholes page you will find a radio show produced in 1987 by Al Margolis and Rich Clark on WSIA in Staten Island especially for my own show back in the day. This two hour program is almost like a time capsule with experimental and weird underground treats through the whole program.
In the Early Experience section you will find New York underground artists, David Solomonoff and Carola Von Hoffmannstahl-Solomonoff with a previously published piece about their time in the home recording scene. They are still active and weirder and more delightful then ever.
