March 2011
This month I am pleased to feature “das” in the Artist Spotlight. As the main guy behind Big City Orchestra, das has been creating music in unimaginable amounts, curating live performances, assembling radio shows, running his ubuibi label and generally being a super active participant in the underground music scene for 30 years plus now. To my way of thinking he is one of the most inspirational and important figures, not just in the west coast and SF Bay Area community, but in the worldwide underground music landscape as a whole. Starting his projects in the 1970s and continuing even today with purpose and intelligent insight he shows no sign of letting up. I am glad we are able to honor him in some small way with an interview and a feature on his work. Please click on his links for some real surprises and a whole heaping load of experimental and unnameable music.
Our Tape Of The Month is a lo fi home taper beauty mixing rock with confessional folk approaches by Tom Burris, who, when he made “Boxes” lived in Indiana. I am always hesitant to put up a release by someone I’ve lost touch with but I am making another exception because this tape is so good, so personal and I cannot find Tom anywhere. If you find him or know of his whereabouts please contact me.
A very early contact of mine, Mark Hanley has checked in with some early experience comments. His guitar based drone rock and improvised music has always been a favorite and I am hoping to use one of of his early cassettes as a Tape Of The Month down the line.
Due to the short month and other commitments I was unable to fill in many of the other sections this month. In April I will be shoveling more content into many of these.
As always, I value your input and comments. Drop me a line if you feel like it at:

And, if you feel like writing a short piece on your favorite home taper, or a review of a tape old or new, or perhaps a memory of your own experiences in underground music please do so. All are welcome.
